A Brief History

In 2017, I moved to Jupiter Farms, a rural community in Jupiter, Florida, known for its open spaces and tranquil atmosphere. My property spanned more than an acre, complete with a pond and plenty of room for a dog to roam. Having lost a beloved pet years before, I finally felt ready for a new canine companion—a hunting partner to share my outdoor pursuits.

After researching various breeds, I discovered versatile hunting dogs and became particularly intrigued by Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. These regal-looking dogs possess a rich history and excel in both field and waterfowl hunting. Often referred to as “Griffs,” they are not only exceptional hunters but also make wonderful family pets.

My search led me to Plum Creek Kennel in South Georgia, run by Michael Pierce. With over 20 years of experience breeding Griffs, Michael brought a wealth of knowledge to his craft. A retired K-9 officer and avid hunter, Michael grew up on a farm and honed his expertise in training and breeding these remarkable dogs. I decided to reserve a female puppy from his upcoming litter.

As I waited for the litter to arrive, Michael introduced me to the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA). I joined the Florida Palmetto Chapter and began attending their training sessions to prepare for my future pup. Unfortunately, no female puppies were available in the litter. Michael, however, offered me an alternative: a small male runt that his wife had grown fond of.

Though my heart had been set on a female, I asked for a couple of days to consider the offer. Pictures of the litter revealed an undeniably adorable little runt, and I ultimately chose him. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

On New Year’s Eve 2020, I brought home my energetic bundle of joy, naming him Mr. Teddy Roosevelt in honor of the great conservationist, hunter, and former president. Teddy quickly became the light of my life, with a personality as big as his namesake’s legacy.

Through participation in Florida Palmetto NAVHDA events, Teddy earned the affectionate nickname “Wigglebutt” for his exuberant butt-wiggling whenever he interacted with people. His natural hunting ability and strong prey drive are matched only by his animated enthusiasm and boundless affection.

In 2023, Michael reached out to ask if I might be interested in a female Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. He had an adorable little female available after a prior buyer was unable to commit. I had been contemplating the idea of a companion for Mr. Teddy Roosevelt, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. After thoughtful consideration and discussions with my wife, we decided to welcome a second Wirehaired Pointing Griffon into our family.

Miss Edith Roosevelt, commonly referred to as Edy joined our family. Mr. Teddy and Edy Roosevelt quickly became hunting companions. In honoring the history and lineage of Mr. Teddy and Edy Roosevelt, Wiggle Butt Bird Dog Kennels was born.
